Dynamics of city and campus and new concepts

Central question in the Bouwkunde-Guerilla concept is how architecture can optimize the performance of the University of Bouwkunde.
The compression of all of the different Bouwkunde programs into one location and building, cleaved from the city of Delft by a river, compromises each individual program and therefore the performance of the university. This alienation of the Bouwkunde program from Delft proper is exacerbated by the massive scale and limited opening hours of the former building.

Bouwkunde_Guerilla aims to optimize the universities performance by optimizing the exchange of information between students themselves and their teachers by allowing the exchange to happen whenever, wherever. Studio’s, library, model shop and all other functions of direct use for the students are absorbed within Delft’s urban fabric, unifying the student’s daily lives and the university of Bouwkunde. With offices and studios clustered around open spaces, squares become faculties, streets become hallways, restaurants become lecture halls and churches become model shops.

Because the majority of the administrators live outside Delft, the train station is the ideal location for their offices; theaters are used as auditoria during office hours for optimal usage of the cities resources.
Each individual program of Bouwkunde is placed on its optimal location within Delft’s urban fabric, virtually linked through the internet and internal network and physically connected by bike, foot and the new tram line. By renovating existing buildings within Delft’s urban landscape, extreme flexibility is combined with an optimal sustainability; even the best energy performance of a new building cannot compete with the energy savings in building materials and construction of renovating existing buildings.

In our proposal, Bouwkunde becomes a sustainable rhizome assimilated into the city fabric with an optimal 24/7 exchange of information with the university and city complementing each other. Guerilla is a strategy where Bouwkunde becomes more Delft and Delft more Bouwkunde, making an optimal place to exchange and absorb information.
